It ensues again, an obsession over a certain topic read from a book, a movie star seen in some film, or a project picked up from work. This time, it’s the point of sale system entry. There has been countless times I stare at the computers handled by cashiers in malls, grocery stores, and restaurants, and trying to identify if they’re up to date with their pos software, or still stuck in the stone-age cash register.
The morning ritual coffee at McDonalds is not spared from this lingering fixation. It’s fun to see trainees handling the unit, confused over the specific menu buttons of their pos system, like a child trying to learn how to type in the keyboard, running their fingers in the air in search of the right button, and the manger at their backs, freakily looking at both trainee, and point of sale system unit. I would not wonder if they grew tentacles, and two more eyes, to better watch their employees getting used, or getting confused.
